Mallets also tend to carry bigger, bolder alignment lines on top — genuinely useful when you're standing over a downhill six-footer to win a skin and your brain has gone completely blank.
None of this makes one shape "better." It means they solve different problems, and I'd spent six years assuming I knew which problem I had without ever actually checking — the same way I never checked whether premium golf balls were doing anything for my game until I actually stopped buying them.

Golfers with a straight-back-straight-through stroke — the face stays square to the target line the whole way, no real rotation — tend to get along best with a face-balanced mallet, because the putter's own weighting matches the stroke's natural motion. Golfers with an arcing stroke, where the face opens slightly going back and closes slightly coming through, traditionally got fitted into a blade with some toe hang to match that rotation.
Here's the part that surprised me: plenty of today's mallets are built with the same toe-hang weighting as a blade, just wrapped in a bigger, more forgiving head. The old rule — arc stroke means blade, straight stroke means mallet — isn't really true anymore. It's less about which shape you pick and more about whether that specific putter's balance matches how your stroke actually moves, which almost nobody checks before buying. It's the same blind spot that shows up when a guy gets properly fit for clubs at a 20-handicap and realizes half of what he assumed about his own swing was wrong.
I have an arc stroke. I found that out standing in front of a mirror in my garage, not at a fitting — you can see it yourself by watching the face open slightly on the backswing. Speed, not line, is what actually causes most three-putts for bogey golfers — leaving a fifteen-footer six feet short or four feet long, then missing the comebacker. A blade's feel through the hands makes it easier to sense pace on longer putts, and that feel gets muted slightly inside a mallet's bigger head. It's a version of the same course-management math behind playing smart when you're not playing well — knowing which specific mistake you're actually prone to before you try to fix it.
The guy in our group who never three-putts, Jim, plays a blade he's had for a decade and has never once considered switching. His strike is repeatable enough that forgiveness isn't the problem he needs solved — pace is, and the blade gives him that better than any mallet would.
If a buddy asked me straight, here's the actual dividing line I'd give him. Go blade if your three-putts mostly come from bad speed on putts you struck clean — the ball just didn't travel the right distance. You don't need to buy two putters to run a version of this test. The cheapest way in: ask around your own group. Somebody in almost every foursome owns the shape you don't currently play, and most guys will hand over a putter for nine holes if you ask on the range instead of the first tee, when there's no pressure and nobody's timing you.
Failing that, most pro shops keep a demo rack specifically for this — walk in, ask to putt a few models on the practice green for ten minutes, no purchase required. Track just one thing: on the putts that feel a little off, does the ball still finish close, or does it wander? That's the entire test, compressed into ten minutes instead of a month.
What you won't get from a ten-minute demo is the month-long pattern — the version where you forget you're testing anything and your stroke goes back to being genuinely yours instead of a stroke performing for an experiment. If the ten-minute version tells you something, that's a start. If you want the real answer, you need enough rounds that you stop paying attention to the putter and start just playing golf with it again.
Jim's actual question when I told him about this: "Couldn't you just be putting better because you're paying more attention, not because of the putter?"
Fair, and probably partly true — paying closer attention to your stroke for a month improves almost anything, mallet or blade. But the specific pattern doesn't fit a pure-attention story. If attention alone explained it, the makes should have climbed steadily across all four weeks as I got more locked in. Instead the three-putts dropped specifically in the two weeks I had the mallet in my hands, then came back up the moment I picked the blade back up in week three — a swap effect, not a steady-improvement curve.

Going into this, I expected to confirm what I already believed — that a blade was the "real" putter and a mallet was a crutch.
Two three-putts on the mallet weeks against five on the blade weeks isn't a coincidence four Saturdays in a row. Neither was the ten-footer that held its line on a mishit I didn't even feel happen.
I kept the mallet. Not because it made me a better putter — I'm still very much a 20-handicapper, and nothing about this article changes that I'm a weekend golfer first and a gear tester second — but because it quietly took some of my worst misses and made them survivable, which is exactly what improving my own experience is supposed to mean when I'm the one running the test instead of a lab.
If you've got a repeatable stroke and your misses are mostly about pace, don't let this talk you out of a blade you already trust. Can switching putters actually lower my score? It can shave strokes if three-putts from mishits are your specific problem — that's a real, fixable leak for a lot of bogey golfers. It won't lower your score on its own if your actual issue is speed control, alignment reading, or just not practicing putting at all.
